I am so disappointed. American has given away our humanity. My way to cope is to help those who are less fortunate and will be greatly impacted by the changes to come. I refuse to lose my humanity and compassion for others. So I will be helping at soup kitchens and with the homeless and the Ukrainian refugees I sponsored, doing what I can for my neighbors.
To quote the title of a book, I am a stranger in my own land. I don't know my neighbors. Up is down, down is up. This election was all about Donald Trump. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. The American public went in to this election knowing exactly who and what Donald Trump is and voted for him anyway. We have seen the enemy and it is us!!! Democracy was fun while it lasted.
Enter a strong-handed influence of religion in a coalition of Evangelical Protestant nationalists and Catholic postliberal integralists. They must feel the wind at their backs, with a payoff due from their candidate. Strongmen have sought and received blessings of religious representatives since forever, and the practice has now become an epidemic worldwide. The once-noble experiment of a government free of the vagaries of religions in its implementation is now reduced to mere words in the First Amendment.
Bob, you were the person who gave me hope in 2016. I don't know if you remember, but you and the late Martin Johnson and I had a conversation, and you said "our system can withstand this. We will make it through this." That gave me great comfort. I still think that, despite my grief this morning. I have to be strong for my daughters. They are scared today. I told them that love is always the answer and that we need to circle our wagons and love our communities. We have to take care of each other. And we need to protect those around us that need protecting.
Someone once said “we get the government we deserve.” I’m beyond disappointed, I’m embarrassed as an American that we could be this stupid. After all that we’ve seen from this man in the last 9 years - we elect him again? It almost makes me laugh. A felon who legally cannot work at the Post Office or drive a school bus is now going to be President- brilliant! Trump has been telling us what he’s going to do - and America said that’s what we wanted. And now we are going to get it - quality of public education is going to plummet as the dept of Education gets dissolved, Affordable Care Act will be repealed, US participation in NATO won’t last through 2025, aid to Ukraine is over, our national debt will explode as more tax cuts to wealthy and corporate America get put in place, retribution against political adversaries and media - take him at his word. His last 4 years were a dry run- he learned some things - this time he won’t be playing nice like last time.
It's like Jim Jones leading his followers to drink the Kool-Ade. Eventually, as they see the harm Trump (their cult leader)is doing to the country and themselves, they will put their costumes away. He will not be attracting the A and B type people to our government but the D and F list grifters like himself.
I, too, had naively thought that reason and decency would prevail, that educated people at least would remember lessons__not experienced, but passed down__ from Germany prior to and during WWII. What hurts the most is that many of the outspoken supporters are people close to me whom I love and respect, who believe that this unleashed monster was sent by God, and anyone who dissents is therefore the enemy at worst, and at the very least, unsaved. It's like our country has turned upside down. But our grieving must be brief because there is much work to be done.
This from Brett Stephens in today’s New York Times should rekindle the fire in Democrats down in the dumps:
“ I voted reluctantly for Harris because of my fears for what a second Trump term might bring — in Ukraine, our trade policy, civic life, the moral health of the conservative movement writ large. Right now, my larger fear is that liberals lack the introspection to see where they went wrong, the discipline to do better next time and the humility to change.”
Of course I am upset, gloomy, pissed and challenged, but I refuse to become "them". I will remain friendly to what few R friends remain and argue with them if necessary. I will continue to comply with my oath as an officer, "to defend the US Constitution against all enemies, foreign and DOMESTIC....." and be thankful for all of the blessings bestowed upon me by my Momma and Daddy. and of course, love always. ron thompson
I am numb. Yesterday it seemed impossible that Trump could win. Looking back, it seems inevitable. The most shocking Fox News comment I heard this morning was this election shows that the American people will not stand for "weaponizing the Justice System." They consider all government charges against Trump, as well as the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago, to be weaponization.
I'm afraid they'll consider any of the punishments Trump has promised to have the justice system carry out against his opponents to be valid "pay-back." Consider the Bastille. Pray that it does not come to this.
My next book to read will be Sinclair Lewis’s “It Can’t Happen Here!”
Yesterday reminds me of a joke from my childhood. A semi truck was going down a mountain out of control because the brakes failed. The driver was asked, “What are you going to do? I’m going to wake up Leroy in the sleeping cab.” Why? “Because Leroy has never seen a bad wreck!”
Although I feel like Leroy being awakened, history is on my side because my non-slave owning ancestors survived the Civil War. We will survive Trump and his minions!
Now is not the time to grieve over our country. We lost an election and face unbelievable challenges. We must all resolve to continue to speak out.

Well said Michael. Have to agree with every word.
Message to the trumpians: Watch what you ask for, You just might get it.

Those are wise words, Lance. I have to believe what you wrote is true.

I feel like the doctor just told me “It’s fatal. There’s nothing we can do”.
The Democratic process actually destroyed Democracy.
Thank you for this.

I read Sinclair Lewis' book in 2016 when Trump was elected the first time. It ends on a redemptive note that gives me hope that our story will, too.
I could simply copy and paste my comment from yesterday simply removing its conditional aspect. It's over.
