This is solid gold. Reasoned advice any candidate should feel grateful to receive. And a great example of how to use your obvious experience and wisdom here to help our political system regain its footing. Thanks Bob!

I am now a RINO. I changed my party affiliation specifically to vote in the Republican primary, where I believe Louisiana’s future direction will be decided. (Fifty years ago I first registered as a Democrat for the same reason, because the area where I lived at that time was heavily Democratic.) Obviously i can vote for whichever candidate I prefer in the general election, regardless of what party I’m registered with.

Perhaps that’s another possibility for Cassidy: encouraging people on the left to switch parties on paper and vote for him. The move to closed primaries was a blatant power grab by the right, but we can thwart it by playing their game. (Frankly, in my mind his vote to confirm RFK Jr has cancelled the positive of his vote to convict in the second impeachment, but I doubt that any more moderate Republicans will be on the ballot.)

I understand your strategy but my right hand would fall off in utter disgust if I were to change my party to Republican. My heart might stop beating and my breathing cease to do such an action . That is how much I disdain the current president and his folly of a cabinet.

It feels weird after fifty years - I originally registered as a Democrat for practical reasons, but as time passed (and I aged), I found myself agreeing more often with the positions of the Democratic Party. But it’s really only a label, and I can use whatever label furthers my interests. As a high school friend of mine used to say, “Callin’ a dog a chair don’t make it one.” (Something I wish more people realized when the current regime calls people traitors, terrorists, radicals, socialists, etc.)

A great thought experiment, The only option is to play the Joe Manchin card, with a come to Jesus moment, as soon as possible. Supposedly, he is a good doctor and has a comfortable retirement sewed up, so integrity might be the best way to get out of the mess that is of his own making. Also, if Trump continues to go further off the rails, now is the time to strategically change positions. Anyone who has continued to support Trump after January 6th, the pardoning of all the insurrectionist ,and the appointment of wildly inappropriate cabinet members, might have to pull the ripcord now in order to save himself.

A well reasoned analysis, Bob. Option 1 would be the honorable one for Cassidy because with friends like him who needs enemies!

Great analysis! I agree with Mr. Winham. I have faith that our Constitution will prevail and we can stop the destruction of our country which will allow a "reckoning" of both parties. I just visited with OLD friends in Holly Ridge and toured the biggest positive operation of a Democracy exactly where I was born, early early one frosty morning, look away look away...America thanks

If JBE enters the race, can the seat be flipped?

Good question. I’m skeptical that any Dem can win that seat, at least in the short term. Would love to be proven wrong.

Sage advice, Bob. He would do well to consider your entire memo and make a decision based on your recommendations I personally believe his only path to victory is the Trump administration crumbling between now and the primary and since Cassidy has clearly tried to play both ends against the middle he would have to hope that strategy can can be viewed as his attempt to maintain the country's stability. Though I would not vote for Kennedy for dogcatcher, I take heart in his attacks on the tariffs and I hope Trump's idiot tariff moves (part of his art of the deal?) backfire on him bigtime and as quickly as possible. Thanks for taking the time to present this memo. I hope Cassidy has sense enough to read it.

This is good stuff. You've really nailed down each scenario so well. His MAGA supports' disdain for him surprised me when I saw it, but it shouldn't have. He tried to things things honorably the first time, and now he is trying to scrub that off. His attempt to dress up like a Trump candidate is far to sad for anyone to take him serious. Democrats will take pleasure in seeing him defeated. Republicans too.

His best bet is to go home and reflect.

He also should thank you for this free blueprint. 😊
