Every time I see Clay Higgins, I am so thrilled to have found a home in Gaithersburg, M.D. For the most part, our elected officials are erudite men and women, who possess the “empathy chip!” Not hateful bigots trying to create Nazi Germany! He has NEVER done anything to benefit his constituents. As you noted; it says more about them, than it does about him! 👹

At the risk of repeating myself, ad nauseum, I have to say those who support or enable Mr. Higgins, Mr. Trump, Senator Kennedy, et al, are disengaged from politics and willfully ignorant of what politicians are doing or the implications of their elections and actions. Should they be forgiven for just not knowing better? Absolutely not. I just corresponded with such a person (who, BTW, is otherwise quite brilliant) and his bottom-line what that everything is in God's hands. Really? God didn't give us free will and a responsibility for our own well-being? As I told him, I cannot allow myself to be a fatalist or a nihilist - apparently, in addition to those who might fervently support the Higginses, Kennedys, and Trumps of the world, far too many of our citizens have simply given up on our system and cast votes to destroy it, realizing they are doing so, or not.

Just when I think there isn’t much that could shock me anymore, there’s this.

This man is very clearly a despicable racist of the highest order and only one of his fellow members of Congress from Louisiana (Rep.Troy Carter) had the decency to call him out for posting his racist posts on X. While I don’t claim to know the man’s intelligence based on his record in Congress and his district, I believe that the man demonstrates by his ignorant written words and actions that he is deficient in formal education and he could be perceived as very low on the intelligence scale. Voters in his district should take these deficiencies in him to note when they are voting for a member of Congress to represent them in this district when they vote in November.

Re: Higgins’ intelligence

He once said we should get rid of libraries in favor of church owned alternatives. “We will change the whole public library paradigm. The libraries regular Americans recall are gone. They’ve become liberal grooming centers,” he said.

Clay Higgins is evidence that the Republican Party is moving closer and closer to nominating and electing a school shooter to office. I appreciate your noting his ineffectiveness as a Congressman for his constituents. Lake Charles and SW Louisiana are areas of significant corporate investment that isn’t reflected in public infrastructure, or even hurricane planning, and won’t be. This is a departure from the days of community businesses lifting all boats. LABI, et al, don’t care and that’s reflected in their vassals, Johnson, Scalise and Graves, who have managed to do nothing for Louisiana, and who, long ago, also selected David Duke as their leader. The most those guys do is help clean off the bottom of Higgins’ shoes.

Bob, this is another well-written column, but Higgins is the low-hanging fruit in the La. Congressional Delegation. He got a priceless boost when someone in the 'media' dubbed him the 'Cajun John Wayne,' and he hasn't looked back since.

What I really want to do here is ask you to write a column on BR-area politics before November, like why the Dem Party endorsed Ted James and not Mayor Broome, and how to sort out the awful choices in the 6th district race.... Fields v. Guillory.

Thanks!

I'll consider it, but I've resisted writing about local BR politics, as this is not a Substack for that narrow of an audience. And the Fields race is not really a race, so there's not much to say about it that I haven't already said when the Legislature was re-drawing the districts.

I understand, but another option would be Bluesky. Thanks for flagging the resignation of the BoR vice-Chair. Wow.

Every time I'm introduced or introduce myself to people from out of state, who don 't know me very well, who ask where I live, and whose respect for me is of high importance; I always qualify my answer by saying I voted against every Republican who represents my state and my voting districts. I may from time to time state that Senator Cassidy occasionally shows courage in voting his convictions and in alignment with my views. I often find myself saying that I didn't grow up in Louisiana and that my job since the late 1980's plus my love for fellow progressives and Democrats in my state and for the City of New Orleans and its culture brought me here and keep me living here. However, all but very few of the GOP people we elect are a total embarrassment to me! Many of them are 'David Duke with the same, but very well concealed, baggage' where the true nature of 'their baggage' is revealed from time to time.

As long as the their constituents continue to re-elect them, Higgins and Senator “Ugly Head” will continue to be racist. Kennedy means “ugly head” in Gaelic.

At the very least, the House needs to censure Higgins. I would prefer a vote to remove him, but that certainly won't happen. Higgins is a disgrace. I am not convinced Congressman Higgins is bright enough to understand the harm he is doing. Kennedy is, making the Senator far worse. Both have disgraced Louisiana for too long, but as Bob says, the people of Louisiana will continue to send them back to DC, hurting our image and our ability to get the help we need for future hurricane recovery.
